thought:

the Virgin Suicides was supposed to reference the tragedy of Miss Havisham from Great Expectations.

Here is a table of comparison: (lol, table)
THE VIRGIN SUICIDES vs GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Cecelia’s party which had never been cleaned up and left to decay, until the boys found it.

Miss Havisham and how she stopped all the clocks on her wedding day, and refused to see light until Pip was taken in and saw it all.

Cecelia’s old mouldy wedding dress which she found second-hand and wore all the time, including on the day of her suicide. She sheared off the hem by herself.

Miss Havisham never taking off her wedding dress since he left her on her wedding day.

Had a dramatic first suicide attempt, but was saved, for what it was worth. She slit her wrists and sat still for days, with bandaged wrists and new blood, before throwing herself out of the window and finally resting in peace.

She (Miss Havisham!) dramatically gave herself up to the flames, but lay on her party table after being saved. She was in pain and died not long after from the burns.

Haha…now I’m going to refuse to google this because I bet a million other people have made this comparison table and theirs is better than mine.
