I'm so grateful to my english teacher in year seven for giving me Flowers For Algernon to read. It's really a very touching story.
It's about a man called Charlie Gordon who is mentally retarded, but is honest and good and tried hard to learn. He knows he's dumb and wants to be part of the radical new experiment that will triple his IQ. He goes through several tests, and becomes friends with a white mouse named Algernon who has also undergone the operation.
After the operation he gets so smart he analyses his own treatment and identifys a fault that no one else has seen, and realises the change in him won't be permanent. He realises that his co-workers weren't actually his friends but used him as entertainment.
It's sort of like the itsy bitsy spider, which is such a sad sad song. The spider works his way up, only to be washed back down. But it still keeps trying.
